Vurb Tested: CORE Moto Brake Lines

STAFF BLOG

A friend of mine once gave me some advice; he said, never put anything on your bike unless it improves performance, and for the most part I have stuck with that advice. Sure, I have been known to install some of the cool factor on my bike because lets face it we all paid a bunch of money for our bikes and we want them to look good under all that dirt and mud. When I was asked to test CORE Moto's break lines I kept this thought in my head, "am I really gaining anything by installing this on my bike"?

As it was, my KX450 front brake line was worn because of the fiction between the break line and the guide loop on the fork. This rubbing caused a thinning of the protective layer which in turn could cause a brake line failure. After observing this I went ahead and replaced the break line and while I was at it did the same in the rear. My bike currently has the stock break rotor and caliper which historically do not have the breaking power of some aftermarket brands.

Initially it was hard to notice a performance difference between the OEM and the CORE Moto break lines. With a little more time and the longer and harder I rode while purposefully over using the breaks, I never noticed the spongy feel that I would sometimes get with the OEM break lines. After several rides and a few races I found this phenomenon to be fact. You will absolutely feel a performance difference when using this product.

CORE Moto has over 19 color combinations to choose from, I chose the green just to add to my KX450s look. The easy to adjust pivotong eyelets afforded the ability to tuck lines out of reach of most obstacles. I did however find that the bend on the front break line eyelet (closes to the master cylinder) could have used a bit less of a bend. This change, though mostly aesthetic would ensure the break line stays intact if it took a good hit.

The affordability / cost of the product will appeal to riders that need to change their break lines versus someone that might just want to. Stating that this product is available for a relatively affordable price of just under $125 (for the front and rear set) may cause some riders to laugh, however when you pay $50 or $60 worth of entree fees (if you're lucky), a gate fee and who knows how much for gas and food; to have a something as simple as a brake line ruin your day or weekend I would say $125 is affordable. As Core Moto states in their brochure break lines are often overlooked yet simple modification. When a privately owned company offers an American made product that looks great, provides an increase in performance, and a life time warranty that should tell a person how much this company believes in their product and so do I. If you are looking to replace your break lines I would recommend replacing them with a CORE Moto.
