CCS May 2,3 - 2015 NJMP Thunderbolt Race Report

My dad drove thru the night Wednesday to make it home to get me to the track - arrived pretty late to the track - got set up - woke up Friday morning to a very windy 39 degrees. We decided it was best to let the weather warm up before turning some laps. Lunchtime came - warmers went on the tires - 3rd call for Advanced Group and out I went - We were trying some new gearing so I needed to figure out my shift points - Bike felt good first lap and on the second lap in the chicane - the bike High Sided me to where my feet were above my helmet - was able to hold onto the bars and the bike and make it into the grass and get it slowed down - was pretty crazy!!! Get the bike back to the pit - we thought the radiator went but the lower hose on the water pump had broken the safety wire and the hose clamp and popped off. Talking to the race family in the paddock many suggestions were thrown out to check and we spent the rest of the day checking the different ideas - what the cause was is unbelievable - the radiator cap...... the cap was corroded and formed a seal and would not let the pressure blow off into the overflow bottle and recirculate the engine - causing the hose to burst off. Thankfully Dad had a spare radiator cap and we settled in for the night and went thru CCS Tech! If you never came out and rode with us at Absolute Cycle your missing out!!! Come ride with us!!!

The HIGHLIGHT of the day and weekend was the YCRS Demo Program - I got to ride a couple AWESOME motorcycles - but my HUGE smile was from the 2015 R1!!! What a Rocketship!!!!! Stop by the YCRS garage and talk to Keith Culver about taking the best school in the country or talking a new bike for a Demo and seeing how good the Yamaha Motorcycles are!!! Dad Hint Hint R6!!!!!

Saturday morning was two CCS practice sessions - bike felt good - I felt good - but it was a little chilly and I just needed to do laps - so I got as many as I could. First race of the day was Race 8 Middleweight GP - Started I think 47th out of 51 and in the 2nd wave - it's so hard trying to catch the front in 6 laps - having some rear grip issues I battled it out to 22nd place. Lot's of traffic, made for an interesting race!!! Next up at the end of the day was ASRA qualifying - a 12 minute session to set the grid for Sundays race. made some changes after the race, the grip got better but was still not there yet - qualified 7th out of 15 riders. Lap times were struggling with a best so far of 1:37.5 - which is about 4 seconds off my best time at NJMP.

We had a HUGE BBQ Saturday night and it was great to hang with my track family and Dad went over the bike and took the clutch apart to make sure we were ready for Sunday - the clutch had been slipping a little on Saturday. Bikes back together - party is over - to sleep I went.

Sunday morning the sun was shining and the weather was good - no more wind and ready for my 5 races on Sunday. 1 round of CCS practice to get warmed up - brought put Gremlin #2 of the weekend - on lap 4 of the practice session the speedo started flickering down the front straight and showing a check engine code - so I immediately pulled into the pits knowing we had limited time before my first race of the day!!! Fortunately one of my great sponsors PRO WRENCH was at the track to watch some great racing and helped my Dad find the problem and get it fixed right away so I would be ready to race!!!! THANX AWESOME Tom!!!!

Race 3 ASRA Sportbike - starting 7th I had a better start and battled the whole 8 laps to come in 5th!!! with my first top 5 finish of the weekend and putting faster laptimes down and getting closer to the front!!!! Best lap time - 1:35.8

Race 6 Middleweight SuperSport - started 28th in the 2nd wave and finished 6th - Feeling great on the bike and made some great passes and had so much fun - best lap time 1:34.4

Race 9 Heavyweight SuperSport - The 750 class I do on my 600 - started 33rd out of 41 riders and in the 2nd wave - finished 13th - 6 laps its real hard to catch the front guys from the 2nd wave!!!!

Race 12 Heavyweight Superbike - the 750 class again - started 23rd an in the 2nd wave and finished 4th!!!!!!!!!! and the best time so far of the weekend at 1:34.1!!!!!!

Race 15 Middleweight Superbike - started 46th on the grid an in the 2nd wave - battled hard an fought thru traffic to bring it home in 13th - lap times were 1:35's - had some great battles and stuffed it in on a couple of friends which made it even better

Two Top 5's and two top 10's from starting in the back of the 2nd waves
